THE CHURCH Hill Army Cadets based in Redditch are urging young people and adult leaders to join their ranks.
Cadets can join from 12 years old and have to leave on their 18th birthday.
Si Herring, from the Church Hill detachment, said: “We, the adult instructors, teach the cadets army-based subjects, such as field-craft including basha building, country code, cooking outdoors and more. Map and compass skills, first aid, drill skills, weapons handling and the Duke of Edinburgh certification are just a few things the cadets are taught.
“We also raise funds for the Royal British Legion when requested with helps the cadets to engage with members of the public.”
In the summer the leaders organise weekend camps for the cadets which run from Friday to Sunday to enhance their training.
Some will also sleep outdoors, while others will sleep in dorms but all are fed three meals a day – this will mostly be at the training centre at Tiddesley Wood.
Adult instructors give up their free time to train the cadets during the week when the cadets parade on Mondays and Thursdays.
Part of the training given is to raise funds for the training they get.
On June 7, the group will be sleeping out to raise funds for the ACCT UK (Army Cadet Charitable Trust) which helps to provide the training, transport and accommodation.
The cadets will also participate in the VE Day 80th anniversary parade from the Palace Theatre to the St Stephen’s War Memorial tomorrow in the town.
