THE REDDITCH community are invited to join members from the Royal British Legion (RBL) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Garden of Remembrance.
Organised by the Redditch branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), the gathering will include readings, music, and shared moments of remembrance at the memorial gardens in Plymouth Road.
Council dignitaries will join members of the local RBL at the memorial arch which boasts an internal flame in a bronze bowl.
Residents are invited to take part as a century of memories are honoured, and to pay tribute to lives well lived and lost.
Redditch Mayor, Coun Joanna Kane, who will be at the event, said: “What an absolute privilege to be a part of this memorial to mark 100 years of these beautiful gardens, where the courage of those who gave their lives in the Great War, and subsequent conflicts, will never be forgotten.
“As we still face troubling times across the world, the peace and tranquillity of these gardens remind us that we must learn from the past to create a better future.”
The Earl of Plymouth donated the land for the Garden of Remembrance in Redditch. This contribution allowed the creation of a peaceful space to honour those who served and sacrificed in war.
The garden, located on Plymouth Road, was originally designed by John Gibson Blakey, a notable gardener of his time, who was for some time head gardener to the Rev Canon Horace Newton who lived at Holmwood.
RBL Redditch Branch Secretary, Mark Evans, said: “Whether you come in memory, in hope, or in quiet contemplation, your presence will help us weave another layer into the garden’s long story of love and legacy. We will remember them.”
The service, on July 26, will include readings, music, and the time for quiet reflection.
People are asked to arrive at the Garden of Remebrance on Plymouth road at 11.45am. The service starts at 12pm.
