A SPECIAL summer event held by Redditch Astronomical Society (RAS) brought together creativity, literature and science at the town’s library, writes Oliver Cureton-Phillips.
The day began with a lively workshop which was led by children’s book illustrator Becky Hardy. She gave interesting insights into her famous illustrations in ‘The Unlikely Astronaut’ and shared insightful stories on her career journey and how she became involved in the project.
Her sparkling enthusiasm inspired the younger members of the audience.
In the afternoon, award-winning science fiction author Chris Beckett engaged with visitors during a thought-provoking question-and-answer session.
He spoke about the writing process, the inspirations behind his books, and the wider sci-fi genre. He encouraged guests to explore the links between imagination and science.
Throughout the day, RAS members welcomed both library users and event guests to their stand, where they discussed astronomy, shared resources and inspired conversations about the wonders of the universe.
The event was supported by the Arts in Redditch Foundation, with the library providing a welcoming venue.
Nic Smith, RAS events co-ordinator, said: “This event was a real team effort, and we’re very grateful to Redditch Library and Arts in Redditch for their support in bringing it together.
“It’s been wonderful to see families, readers and astronomy enthusiasts come together to explore science, creativity and the universe in such an engaging way.”
Redditch Astronomical Society holds monthly meetings at the Windmill Centre, covering everything from talks and workshops to stargazing sessions.
New members and visitors are always welcome to join and share in the society’s passion for the night sky.
