MATURE drivers across West Mercia will be able to book onto a discounted course to boost confidence and sharpen skills behind the wheel thanks to the region’s police and crime commissioner.
West Mercia’s police and crime commissioner, John Campion, has provided £15,000 to IAM RoadSmart to allow the firm to subsidise the cost of its Mature Driver Review.
The course, delivered by IAM RoadSmart in partnership with the force’s road safety team, will cost £20 instead of £86.50 for the first 300 signups.
The 1-hour review is carried out by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the motorist’s own car, from their home address, on roads familiar to them, and they can take a relative or friend if they prefer.
Residents in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire can book by calling 0300 303 1134 and using the code WMP.
To receive the subsidised rate, courses must be booked over the phone. This is a limited offer, and bookings are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
PCC John Campion said: “Road safety is one of the biggest areas of concern, and I know from the correspondence I receive how devastating harm on our roads can be for families and communities.
“I’m determined to play my part in reducing the number of fatalities on our roads.”
Superintendent Stuart Bill from West Mercia Police echoed the PCC’s priority to reduce injuries and fatalities from road traffic collisions.
He added: “With more drivers on the roads until an older age and being a largely rural geographical force area, we will continue to work alongside our partners to do all we can to educate mature drivers about how to keep driving safer for longer and how to recognise the signs of when to retire from driving.
“Thanks to this funding, mature drivers are able to take advantage of a great offer which will provide them with honest, impartial and practical advice which could make a significant difference in their driving skills as well as improve their confidence on the roads.”
