TWO areas of Redditch which are classed as ‘deprived’ are set to receive £20million of government funding over the next 10 years.
The cash, announced by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer last night (Thursday) and designated through the Government’s Pride in Place programme, is aimed at empowering local residents and they will get to decide where best to invest it to most improve their areas.
Greenlands and Woodrow will receive £2million each year for the next decade to spend as the community sees fit.
For the first time, decisions will not be made in London but by an independent Neighbourhood Board made up of local residents and community stakeholders.
This will ensure the funds deliver what these communities truly need.
Redditch MP Chris Bloore welcomed the news and said it was ‘a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revamp the areas’.
He said: “For too long, communities in Redditch like Greenlands and Woodrow have been left behind and overlooked.
“After years of underinvestment, we now have £20million right here in our own communities.
“Local people will decide how the money is spent – whether that’s improving community centres, creating more youth activities and support services, enhancing local health and wellbeing initiatives, offering skills training and employment support or making our streets safer and more welcoming.”
Residents will soon be invited to join a community consultation to share their ideas and priorities.
Redditch Borough Council leader, Coun Sharon Harvey, said: “This huge £20million investment is wonderful news for
“Redditch which will empower people in challenging communities.”
“The Plan for Neighbourhoods programme gives real influence and input at a neighbourhood level, with a strong commitment to consultation and engagement.
“Working with a variety of stakeholders we can create positive and meaningful impacts.
“I can’t wait for Redditch to get started on this exciting journey to building a better future.”
Mr Bloore added: “This is our moment to come together and take control of our future.
“I encourage all residents of Greenlands and Woodrow to get involved, share their vision and help ensure this investment brings lasting positive change.”
A survey will soon be launched for residents to share their views on how the money should be spent.
