Art installation to be put into Redditch's Alex Hospital

TOWN organisations are joining forces to create a very special art installation at the Alexandra Hospital.

The project is jointly funded by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity, Reimagine Redditch and Arts in Redditch, alongside a grant from Arts Council England.

The groups will work with both staff from across the hospital and the Woodrow community to create the design. The artwork will be called WELCOME and aims to create a focal point at the front of the hospital, greeting the local community and patients.

Richard Haynes, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s director of communications and engagement, said: “We want our hospitals to feel as welcoming and inclusive as possible for all our patients, visitors and staff.

“We know that coming to hospital can be a stressful experience, so by taking a co-design approach with patients, visitors, staff and members of our local community, we aim to revitalise the main entrance to the Alexandra Hospital and make it a more welcoming space for everyone who uses the hospital.”

Sophie Burt, head of fundraising and community development for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity added, “The look and feel of our hospitals has a big impact on how our patients feel when in our care.

“Thoughtful artwork has the power to reduce stress and anxiety and communicate a message of inclusivity and care.”

Reimagine Redditch director Richard Bromhall said: “The way art is created is as important as what the artist makes.

“By working with a variety of people at the hospital and in Woodrow, the artwork will be shaped by local people to make the hospital a more welcoming space for everyone in Redditch.”

Once an artist has been appointed, a series of co-creation workshops will be held both at the hospital and in the local community.

The installation is planned for the new year.
