A REDDITCH school held a Remembrance Service which united pupils, staff and residents from Haywood Lodge in a heartfelt tribute to those who served in wartime.
At St George’s C of E First School and Nursery, residents at Haywood Lodge shared their stories from the Second World War.
Violet Rogers, one of the visitors, shared her personal memories with the children.
She spoke of the night her house was bombed and everything her family owned was destroyed and described how her wider community and family rallied around to support her.
She recalled that time – not with fear, but with gratitude for the love and care she received.
Each class created handmade wreaths and shared poems.
Together, children, staff and guests observed a two-minute silence, standing side-by-side in reflection.
The children surprised the residents with a whole-school singalong of Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again and smiles lit up the room as the residents joined in.
Afterwards, children worked with their guests to create beautiful artwork for them to take home.
Joyce, one of the residents, said: “It was a lovely day that I will remember forever.”
John added: “We love spending time with the children at St George’s and this was a special way to remember this day.”
Headteacher Claire Martin said: “Haywood Lodge is firmly part of our school community.
“Their residents join us for Easter bonnet parades, end of year plays and church services, but this Remembrance event has been the most special one to date.
“It was a privilege to hear directly from someone who remembers the Second World War so vividly.”
