RESIDENTS have hit out at a new planning application submitted to Redditch Borough Council for the former Blue Inn Hotel on Far Moor Lane to be converted into a 51-room house of multiple occupancy (HMO).
The proposal would see the building change from a 51-room hotel to a 51-room HMO, with an reconfiguration of the existing two-block building.
One section would provide bedrooms and the other would include a kitchen, and living space.
At the time of going to press, there were nearly 350 comments on the planning portal, with most of them concerned about the increase in residents and the added strain to local services.
Politicians across the borough have spoken out about their concerns with both Conservative Group planning committee members, Coun Matt Dormer and Coun Brandon Clayton, withdrawing to be able to speak freely about their concerns.
Conservative Group leader Coun Dormer, said: “Residents deserve clear answers about what is being proposed.
“This application raises serious questions – including whether the proposed use genuinely meets HMO standards, whether the impact on local services has been properly assessed and why key information about the long-term use has not been clearly provided.
“Because of the scale of concern in the community, Coun Clayton and I will both step aside from the planning committee for this item so we can speak freely, challenge the application openly and ensure residents’ voices are heard.”
The Conservative Group has also said they will submit a formal planning objection.
Redditch MP Chris Bloore has also called out the application and, in an official comment, added it was an unsuitable site for such a rapid increase in residents.
He said: “Without upgrading local provision and infrastructure, this would put an unnecessary straight on local services.
“I also have concerns about the quality of the proposed housing and think the application is significantly lacking in details.”
He was also concerned about the proposed layout.
“A single kitchen for 51 people is also not practical. It is likely to lead to overcrowding, noise, late-night use and disputes between residents.
“It may also encourage in-room cooking, which creates fire risks.
“There is no clear provision for individual fridges or food storage, which would further increase pressure on shared facilities.”
Residents are encouraged to submit their comments on the council’s planning portal so they are formally recorded.
