A LEARNER driver spent New Year’s Eve in custody after forgetting his ‘L’ plates and then, when stopped by police, testing positive for cannabis.

Officers from Redditch Police carried out a roadside drug swipe which revealed he had taken the class B drug.

And he was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, as well as the learner driver offences.

All learner drivers must display ‘L’ plates and have a qualified driver – who is over 21 and has held a driving licence for three years – in the passenger seat, supervising them.

Some learner insurance policies require the superviser to be over 25.
