Land at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital will no longer be used for commercial development

LAND at Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital will no longer be used for supermarket or commercial development, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed.

The trust identified the 0.7-hectare plot between Quinneys Lane and Woodrow Drive which it deemed ‘surplus to healthcare requirements’ in 2022.

During a visit to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch MP Chris Bloore met senior Trust figures including Acting Chief Executive Stephen Collman and Chief Clinical Strategy Officer Dr Julian Berlet to discuss pressures facing the hospital and the long-term direction of healthcare provision in the town.

The MP toured several departments and was briefed on current capacity challenges across the site.

Hospital leaders confirmed that land previously sold off as part of earlier commercial plans will now be brought back into NHS use.

The move ensures the space can be protected for clinical purposes rather than retail or supermarket development.

Mr Bloore said the decision was particularly significant because much of the existing hospital estate was already operating at or close to capacity, limiting flexibility for new departments or expanded services without additional space.

He said: “Space at the Alex is already tight and staff are working incredibly hard in buildings that are often full to the brim.

“Securing this land for NHS use gives the trust the breathing room and certainty it needs to plan properly for future services, rather than constantly firefighting within existing walls.

“This isn’t just about protecting land. It’s about protecting the hospital’s ability to grow.

“If we want new clinics, modern facilities and specialist services here in Redditch, we have to make sure there is physical room for them.

“This decision helps make that possible.”

He added residents had previously voiced concern about the long-term future of the hospital site and that clarity over the land’s purpose would help restore confidence that expansion and improvement remain realistic options.

Mr Bloore described the Alexandra Hospital as a cornerstone of healthcare for Redditch and the surrounding villages and said he would continue to work with trust’s leadership, clinicians and staff to ensure future planning reflected both professional expertise and community need.

He also thanked frontline NHS workers across Worcestershire for their continued commitment under significant pressure.

The Standard reported in 2022 about plans for the land at the Alex to be used for a new Aldi.
