Studley Operatic Society backs Redditch's Town of Culture bid

STUDLEY Operatic Society (SOS) has thrown its weight behind Redditch’s bid to become the UK’s Town of Culture in 2028.

The group has shown its support for Redditch Borough Council’s Expression of Interest for the prestigious title.

And, although technically Warwickshire-based, the company rehearses and performs in Redditch and many of SOS’s members live in the borough.

SOS is one of many local groups, creative organisations and community voices that together make up the rich cultural life of the town.

The group says performing at the beautiful Palace Theatre is like ‘coming home’ for the society which has been producing shows since 1903.

SOS believes Redditch’s theatre provides a fitting backdrop to showcase what local talent, creativity and culture can achieve.

To back the Town of Culture bid, members took time out of their busy schedule, rehearsing for its forthcoming production of West Side Story at the Palace.

SOS chairperson, Lorraine Hill, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be performing at the Palace Theatre and to be associated with a town that values local culture and creativity.”

And, with almost 70 per cent of tickets already sold, it shows the appetite for arts, theatre and culture in the town.

Lorraine urged anyone wanting to see the show to book now to avoid disappointment.

West Side Story, one of the most celebrated musicals of all time, is inspired by Romero and Juliet.

It tells a timeless story of love and rivalry on the streets of 1950s New York, boasting iconic songs, high energy choreography and powerful performances.

Musical numbers include Tonight, Maria, America and Somewhere.

Lorraine added: “Our cast have poured their hearts into this show, and we promise audiences will gasp, laugh, cry and leave singing all the way home.”

West Side Story runs from Tuesday to Saturday, April 14 to 18 with performances at 7.30pm each evening and a 2.30pm Saturday matinee.

Tickets, which start at £23, are available by visiting: redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk/whats-on/all-shows/west-side-story or by popping into the box office.
