THE 82nd anniversary of D-Day has been marked in Redditch with a ceremony at the war memorial on Plymouth Road.
The town’s Royal British Legion president Philip Jarvis and chairman Gerry Marsden joined MP Chris Bloore, Major General Mark Armstrong, Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire and representatives from the armed forces and veterans where a wreath-laying ceremony took place.
An RBL spokesperson said it was 82 years ago when tens of thousands of courageous British and Allied soldiers, sailors and aircrew took part in the D-Day Landings – the largest seaborne invasion in history.
“Today we remember the service and sacrifice of all those involved, commencing the liberation of France and Western Europe and turning the tide in the Second World War.
“Together with personnel from the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark and Poland, British forces showed immense courage, and endured great sacrifice.”
Mr Bloore added: “It was an honour to lay a wreath and give a reading at the commemorations in Redditch, joining our community in remembering those who served and those who never returned home.
“My sincere thanks to Redditch Royal British Legion for organising today’s service and for their continued work preserving the memory of those who served our country.
“As we reflect on the events of D-Day, we remember all those who played their part in this extraordinary chapter of our history and pay tribute to their service and sacrifice.
“We will remember them.”
