A WELDER from King’s Coughton had a close shave when he said goodbye to his 30-year-old pony tail for a good cause.

Chris Milligan, Braved the Shave for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his friend Matt Reid, who died of liver cancer in April.

Mick, who had sported the same style for three decades decided he needed to do something when he heard Matt, a friend since his late teens had succumbed to his illness.

“It was a spur of the moment thing,” he told the Standard, “but it hits hard when it is so close to home. Macmillan nurses helped out his family a lot.

Surrounded by his friends and family the deed – bar a stripe running from the front of his head to back – was expertly done by barber Jamie Glenn of JAG Hair Studios in Alcester High Street.

Before the event at the end of May, Chris had said he was a little bit nervous but had resolved that it was time for a change. Afterwards there were no regrets.

“It went really well,” he said and confessed he rather preferred his new look.

Chris was also pleased with so raising  £220 for his efforts.

“At the end of the day it’s all for a good cause,” he added.

So far thousands of people have got sponsored to shave their head for Macmillan Cancer Support.
