ALCESTER town centre was transformed into a vibrant celebration of colour, music and community spirit last Sunday (June 14) as the town’s Mardi Gras-themed street market drew crowds from across the district.

Blessed with glorious sunshine, visitors enjoyed a fun-packed day filled with entertainment, street food and attractions for young and old.

Music filled every corner of the town, with performances ranging from the White Hart Morris dancers, Alcester Male Voice Choir and Alcester Victoria Silver Band to the lively samba band, Someone at the Door visiting from Bromsgrove.

Adding to the festival atmosphere, bands performed in pubs along the entire length of High Street, ensuring there was something to suit every musical taste.

The ever-popular Round Table hog roast was a huge success, with the first slices carved by Lord Hertford and champion racehorse trainer Dan Skelton, who also opened the event.

Street food vendors offered an impressive selection of cuisines, while local charity stalls, fairground rides and a dedicated area of inflatables kept youngsters entertained throughout the day.

The Mardi Gras parade was a particular highlight, made even more spectacular by the efforts of Strong Feet Dance Academy.

Fancy dress was out in force, with costumes adding colour, sequins and sparkle to the occasion.

Among the many memorable sights were two women who had travelled all the way from Louisiana to join the celebrations and meet fellow Mardi Gras enthusiasts.

Many of Alcester’s independent shops joined in the festivities by opening their doors and decorating their premises.

New creative studio experience Mad Splatters was duly awarded Best Dressed Shop, while One for the Road took the prize for Best Dressed Pub.

High Bailiff Sharon Constable said, “It was a truly magical day that showed Alcester at its best.

“These events don’t just happen, they are countless hours of preparation gone into making this day special and bringing together the Alcester community.

“We had fun and made many memories.”

The high bailiff also thanked her fellow court leet officers for their organisation and the Alcester Litter Pickers for their help in keeping the town looking its best throughout the day.
