Double success for Redditch's extra care housing scheme

AN EXTRA care housing scheme in Redditch is celebrating a double success after winning a partnership award earlier this year and achieving a ‘Good’ rating in its most recent Care Quality Commission inspection.

St David’s House and Queen’s Cottages, which supports residents to live independently with access to on-site care and support, was named Business of the Year: Progressions at the HOW College Collaboration Awards in April.

The award recognises the strong partnership between St David’s House and the college’s Special Educational Needs department.

Students regularly visit the scheme to develop workplace skills, build social connections and gain confidence in a supportive, real-life environment.

The partnership has also enriched the daily lives of many residents who enjoy the cross generational engagement with the students.

Building on this success, there are also plans to expand the scheme in the new academic year, providing more opportunities for residents, Special Educational Needs students and students in other sectors, such as hairdressing or beauty.

Shortly after receiving the HOW College Award, St David’s House was also rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission following its most recent inspection.

This highlighted the high standards of care, professionalism and the supportive environment provided by the team.

Redditch Borough Council leader, Councillor Matt Dormer, said: “This is fantastic news for St David’s House and Queen’s Cottages.

“To receive both an award for amazing partnership working and a ‘Good’ CQC rating reflects the ongoing dedication of staff to make the world they work in a better place.

“It is great to see the difference this service is making in supporting people to live independently in a way that goes above and beyond basic daily care.

“St David’s is very much part of a community and a place people are proud to call home.”

The council run unit is proudly celebrating this double win which recognises the quality of care and opportunities it provides to its residents and the wider community.
