REDDITCH MP Chris Bloore has welcomed the passing of the Hillsborough Law, describing it as a landmark step towards ensuring bereaved families are treated with honesty, dignity and fairness following public tragedies.
This law will help ensure the authority failings at Hillsborough are never repeated.
It places a legal duty of candour on public authorities and public officials, requiring them to act openly and honestly, and provides publicly funded legal representation for bereaved families at inquests so they are no longer forced to face public bodies on an unequal footing.
Mr Bloore said:”The Hillsborough Law is a long-overdue piece of legislation and a fitting tribute to the 97 people who lost their lives, and to the courage and determination of their families.
“For too long, the families of the Hillsborough victims were denied the truth and forced to fight for justice. No family should ever have to endure that.
“The lessons of Hillsborough have been reinforced by Grenfell, the Horizon scandal and the Infected Blood scandal.
“Time and again we have seen the devastating consequences when institutions fail to tell the truth. This law is about putting that right.”
