A REDDITCH schoolboy has scooped a prestigious award, seeing off the challenge of nearly 150 other top pupils.

Dylan Rees, 11, attends St Bede’s Catholic Middle School in Lodge Park and was crowned ‘Scientist of the Year’ at the awards ceremony at Birmingham University’s School of Physics and Astronomy.

John Kitchen, the school’s head of science, said: “Dylan was selected from 150 children in his year group to win this award.

“He has worked incredibly hard to develop his knowledge of the subject area and uses advanced scientific language with complete understanding. We are very proud of his achievement.”

The awards were organised by the Ogden Trust which was established in 1998 to encourage and promote the teaching and learning of physics in the UK.

Working in partnership with schools, it runs a variety of Ogden Physics Prize schemes, as well as providing funding for a number of science based programmes.

Dylan enjoyed a variety of interactive scientific demonstrations during his visit to Birmingham University, before receiving his award. He was one of 17 year six students from across the West Midlands to be recognised for his outstanding commitment to science based subjects.
