MP backs go-ahead for HS2 project

REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley has voted to back the high speed rail link saying it was good for Redditch, good for the West Midlands and good for Britain.

MPs backed the HS2 bill in a vote in Parliament earlier this week which gives the Government the powers to construct the first phase of the line between London and Birmingham.

It is estimated HS2 will generate between £214 million and £375 million a year for Worcestershire’s economy and reduce journey times between Redditch and London to about an hour, based on passengers travelling from Birmingham International station.

Critics of the project say it will be environmentally damaging and at £50billion is a waste of money when upgrading existing routes can deliver the same benefits.

But Mrs Lumley said: “The ever-increasing gap between infrastructure spending in the south and the rest of the country is widening the economic divide.

“HS2 is also about rebalancing our economy. Investment in HS2 will deliver widespread connectivity improvements, grow markets and increase opportunities to trade.”
