SWIMMERS from across the region and beyond will be taking part in the third Special Olympics Redditch gala event.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will see 13 teams – including one from the borough, across the West Midlands and others from Bristol and Natwich in Cheshire, go head-to-head for glory at the Abbey Stadium pool.

The first race starts at 1.50pm and there will be 84 heats including freestyle swims of between 25m and 200m, backstroke and butterfly of 25m and 50m, relays and a 100m individual medley.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded for the winners with participation ribbons for other

placings.

The event will be opened by Mayor Pat Witherspoon and the charity’s patron Redditch MP Karen Lumley will also be in attendance.

Ron Daykin, from Special Olympics Redditch, said: “Thanks to all our sponsors in helping us to make this event possible and to our volunteers in ensuring the gala runs smoothly.”
