Waterloo stamps on sale in Redditch

A 10-stamp set has been issued by the Royal Mail to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

It worked closely with historians and art historians to choose six works of 19th century art that depict, in chronological order, key events and exchanges of the Battle on the day.

Royal Mail commissioned new artwork for the four stamps on the miniature sheet that pay tribute to the multi-national nature of the Battle; it was a major coalition of countries, including Britain and Prussia, which was united against France.

The battle was not even fought at Waterloo but simply became known as Waterloo as this is where Wellington wrote his despatch from.

The anniversary will also be marked with a special postmark on all stamped UK mail on today, June 19.

Letters sent home from British soldiers involved in the battle can even be viewed at www.royalmailgroup.com .

The stamps are now on sale at www.royalmail.com/waterloo and from 8,000 Post Office branches across the UK including Redditch.
