A SPECIAL flag has been raised above Redditch to commemorate Armed Forces Day.

Mayor Pattie Hill led the ceremony which took place outside Redditch Town Hall at 10am on Monday (June 22) to mark the official awareness day this Saturday.

Joined by councillors, veterans and other members of the Royal British Legion, she paid tribute to the country’s servicemen and women during the proceedings.

She said: “We continue to pay our respect to Redditch people past and present who have served in the Armed Forces.”

“They are busy working around the world promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism.

“Your support for the Armed Forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families. This morning in our town we are raising the flag in their honour.”

The special commemorative flag will be flown all week as part of a national scheme to raise awareness of the contribution made to the country by the armed forces as well as giving the nation the chance to show their appreciation for the work done not just by troops currently serving but their families, veterans and cadets.
