Scouts fly East for Japanese adventure

SIX Redditch youngsters are in for the adventure of a lifetime next month when they jet off to Japan.

Ellen Cockram, Natalie Willetts, Jack Drysdale, Tom Willetts, Dan Stanley and Josh Thompson have been chosen to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Yamaguchi, which will see 30,000 scouts from across the globe gather in a single location.

During the event, which only takes place every four years, the Redditch District Scouts will stay with a local family and have the opportunity to swap badges, tell stories and discuss experiences from their home countries.

Danny Cockram, Ellen’s father, said: “It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It has taken 18 months for each child to raise the £3,000 required to send them to the Jamboree.”

The youngsters, who fly out on July 24, will also take with them a badge designed in a competition last year to mark the 50th anniversary of Redditch’s designation as a new town.
