Special Olympics squad in plea for volunteers

REDDITCH Special Olympics are appealing for volunteers to help coach the team, who all suffer from an intellectual disability.

“You do not require a sports qualification and you don’t need to have an understanding of disabilities as full training can be provided,” said club spokesman Ron Daykin.

“All we ask is that the person has a passion for supporting those who may be disadvantaged by their disability and can give two hours of their time every week.”

The Special Olympics team struck gold last weekend when they came away with another rich haul of medals.

They’d taken part in the Special Olympics Sandwell Athletics meeting at Tipton Sports Academy and collected 15 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals for their efforts.

“It’s incredibly rewarding – you can see the benefits each and every week with the athletes and at the same time it gives our coaches and insight into another side of life and gives them some real, valuable skills,” said Mr Daykin.

“If someone has some interest or knowledge on a particular sport or all sports, or they’ve just got bags of enthusiasm we will welcome you as you can never have too many helpers,” he added.

The squad trains every Monday evening from 6pm to 8pm at Trinity High School and a rewarding time is promised for all who volunteer.
