Cyclists ride coast to coast in just one day

A GROUP of cyclists raising funds for a local health group ended up needing medical assistance themselves after suffering two accidents on their charity bike ride.

The team, which included director of Studley-based Brock Charles Architects, Steev Ellson, had two accidents as they attempted to cycle from coast to coast in one day.

During the ride one cyclist crashed and suffered a broken wrist while another rode into a parked car.

Despite this the team managed to complete the 150 miles trip – climbing 4,500 metres in the process – in aid of Studley’s First Responders.

The ride took them from Seascale in the west to the east coast of Whitby on an iconic route from the mountainous Lake District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the Vale of York and finally into the Northern Valleys of the North York Moors.

The challenge, which attracts hundreds of cyclists each year, is usually completed over four to five days but Steev and the team pushed themselves to the limit and crossed the finish line on the same day they started.

We completed it in just over ten hours,” Steev said.

“Despite the accidents the ride itself was spectacular.”

Along with five others, the director took on the challenge to raise awareness and much needed funding for Studley First Responders.

Speaking before the event, he said the idea came to him after his neighbour’s daughter required urgent help following the birth of her first baby.

“They were the first on the scene, “he said.

“Their quick arrival prevented the emergency becoming more serious and that was the inspiration to cycle across the country.

We need to keep the volunteer Responders available to the community.”
