Always check

Redditch Editorial 4th Sep, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

POLICE are urging people to be aware after a bogus caller claiming to be a gas meter reader got into a home in Greenfield, Redditch after asking for a drink of water on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31).

The man was dressed in a black uniform and carried ID. Later it was discovered that cash and a watch had been stolen.

Officers say that when unexpected callers turn up on the doorstep, first look through the door or window to see who is outside.

If you decide to open the door, put the chain or bar on first.

Check the caller’s details before you let them into your home then telephone the relevant organisation to confirm the caller’s identity – do not rely on a phone number that the caller gives to you.

Do not feel pressurised into buying items on your doorstep and be wary of callers who may offer home repairs or gardening.

Report any crimes or suspicious incidents to the police on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency.

Finally, remember official visitors should always make an appointment beforehand.
