THE friends and former colleagues of one of the pillars of hospital radio at the Alexandra Hospital are to hold a get together to have a drink in his memory.

Richard Norman was a key figure in the founding and launch of Hospital Radio Pulse at the Alex back in 1998 and played an active role in it until 2010 when he emigrated to New Zealand.

He died recently, aged 51, from cancer.

“He played a big part in getting it up and running,” said former colleague Tim Reddish, “he was the engineer and built the studio from scratch, and he could come up with technical solutions on a shoestring.

“He worked unbelievably long hours, usually through the night to get it finished on time. He was a volunteer but always went above and beyond what was expected.”

Richard survived the Christchurch earthquake where his house and was engaged to be married to his partner Kerry Chelsea when he fell ill.

His friends and colleagues in Redditch will now raise a glass to his memory on Thursday, October 1 from 7.30pm at the Washford Mill and also have a chance to sign a book of condolences to send to his partner. All who knew Richard are welcome.
