THE number of motorists caught speeding on the A435 between Alcester and Studley has nearly halved in four years – but activists say that those snapped – 3,854 – is still far too many.
The figures, released by West Mercia and Warwickshire Police under a Freedom of Information request, show that in 2010 a total of 6,797 were caught on camera speeding on the northbound side of the road just before Coughton Court.
This had fallen to 3,854 by 2014 and was standing at 3,211 this year, 2015. Over the five year period the number of accidents recorded was 36.
The stretch of road, notorious for the number of drivers caught in both directions, has a speed limit of 40mph which increases to 50mph shortly after Coughton.
However a spokesperson for the Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia said: “The number of motorists caught speeding on the A435 Alcester Road (northbound) has decreased from 6,796 in 2010 to 3,854 in 2014.
“While it is encouraging to see this figure falling, there is still an unacceptable amount of motorists breaking the clearly-marked speed limit.
“Alcester Road is one of our core speed enforcement sites where there is a history of speed-related collisions and casualties. Enforcement activity aims to reduce speeds and improve the safety of the road for everyone who uses it.”
