BATCHLEY youngsters rolled up their sleeves and put their green fingers to work at The Old Needleworks on Wednesday (November 11).
Children from Batchley First School helped create a wildflower habitat at the site in Britten Street, transforming a grassy verge into what they hope will be a colourful corner for pollinating insects – near to the allotment the youngsters work on.
Staff at the Craft Centre plan to let nature explode after the students launched a collection of seedbombs, fashioned from clay mixed with wildflower seed.
Alistair Waugh, communiuty gardener, said: “There may be a sewing class at The Old Needleworks but we are here for an outdoor sowing class.
“In the last 70 years the UK has lost 97 per cent of its wildflower meadows – we are trying to turn back the clock.”
Organised by Batchley Support Group, the activity is part of the ‘Growing Batchley’ gardening project, which is funded by The People’s Health Trust.
