AN old soldier was remembered last Friday (November 13) when the family of Lance Corporal John A Halford, who died 100 years ago from wounds suffered in the First World War gathered at his gravestone in Plymouth Road Cemetery.
Present were Roger Wilkes and David Jones, Mr Halford’s great grandson along with local historian Philip Jarvis who has made it is mission to mark the 100 anniversary of every soldier from Redditch who fell in combat during the ‘war to end all wars’.
Mr Halford was born in 1874 to William and Harriet Halford of 9, George Street, Redditch.
In 1893 he married Emma and they had nine children but only six survived to adulthood. He worked as a fish hook maker and they lived at 95 Lodge Road and was also a member of St Stephens church congregation.
He served as a Lance Corporal in the Worcestershire Regiment, 3/8th Battalion and died at home from his wounds.
