Gritters at the ready in Worcestershire as Met Office predicts overnight snow

Redditch Editorial 20th Nov, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

HIGHWAYS gritting teams are ready for action for the first time this Winter with snow in the forecast overnight for Worcestershire.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for windy conditions to clip the County this evening, along with a prediction for sleet and snow. The snow is not predicted to accumulate however slushy deposits can be expected.

The Winter Services Team will be monitoring the situation overnight and react accordingly, with additional staff and contractors on standby to ensure the roads are safe and moving.

This year the County Council has over  17,000 tonnes of salt, and 1233 grit bins across the County with 30 gritters all equipped with latest brine spraying technology gritting over  1500 miles of road every time a full grit is carried out.

Councillor John Smith OBE, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We have been lucky that this Winter has been particularly mild so far, and this is the first time our teams will be on standby to react should they need to, As usual I would encourage anyone making journeys to take care. Snow and sleet obviously makes it more difficult for drivers so please don’t take any risks. Grit has never been a miracle cure, so, as always, the message is to never assume it’s safe to travel at normal speeds even if you think a highway has been treated.”
