Redditch shoppers urged to guard against online crime this Black Friday

Redditch Editorial 24th Nov, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

CHRISTMAS shoppers across the borough are being warned that online crime is coming to town along with Santa Claus this festive period.

Figures from last Christmas show that individuals and businesses reported losing £16,426,989 to cyber fraudsters through online shopping and action fraud.

This is a 42 per cent increase in financial loss compared with the festive period in 2013.

Consumers are urged to be urged to be extra vigilant during this week’s Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (December 30) as these are the most common time for fraudsters to act as shoppers head online to try and bag a festive bargain.

To avoid becoming a victim and being conned out of the Christmas you deserve, shoppers are advised to double check the legitimacy of a website or product and check customer reviews to prevent further disappointment.

During payment, money should never be transferred directly into the sellers account and you can ensure payment pages are secure by looking for the ‘https’ and a padlock or key symbol in the browser prior to entering financial details.

Similarly, a credit card, rather than a debit card, gives you more chance of getting your money back if there is any problem.

By taking extra care and being vigilant you can prevent online crime coming to you this Christmas.
