Asda staff spreading festive cheer in Redditch with knitting needles

REDDITCH’S street furniture will be kept cosy this festive period thanks to the knitting needles of staff at the town’s newest superstore.

Employees at Asda have kitted out the town’s trees, railings, bicycles and benches with woolly jumpers in celebration of the store’s opening and the town’s proud history of producing 90 per cent of the world’s knitting needles.

But it’s not just the street furniture in need of winter warmers, Asda Redditch and its dedicated community life champion, Clair Pickersgill, are extending a helping hand to some of the town’s most at risk residents.

Staff at the Jinnah Road superstore will donate over £300 worth of cosy winter clothes from the store’s George fashion range to Redditch Salvation Army and the Radiate Redditch Christmas Hub project – which is run by the Emmanuel Church as chosen by Reverend Paul Lawlor of St. Stephen’s Church.

Rev Lawlor will distribute the garments to those in need with the help of volunteers.

In addition, Asda Redditch will also be setting up an in-store donation hub for customers who would like to do their part this festive season.

Kevin Prince, general store manager, said: “Helping our local communities is an integral part of what we do and something we take pride in as well as enjoyment.

“What’s even better is we are able to donate to not one, but two local groups in need of aid – it’s a great feeling to know we are doing something special this Christmas for those in need in our community.”

Sarah Leeson, church and community Lay Pastor, said: “Radiate Redditch are extremely grateful – warm clothing and other winter essentials are something we can take for granted so it is great to highlight that not everyone has easy access to it.

“It is so refreshing to see such generosity in our local community.”
