THE Mayor of Redditch, Councillor Pattie Hill, switched on the Christmas lights at the Alexandra Hospital this week, wrapping-up a series of festive activities.

On Tuesday (December 15), the festive lights were officially switched on in front of a crowd of spectators following the hospital’s annual carol service and thank you to its volunteers.

Redditch Community Gospel Choir entertained the crowd singing a medley of Christmas carols and songs.

Hospital volunteers were also given a well-deserved thank you and mince pie at the event from the hospital’s interim chief executive Chris Tidman.

Mr Tidman said: “From manning the hospital shops, to patient transport, wayfinding, ward duties, newspaper and confectionery rounds, volunteers provided an invaluable service to our hospitals, patients and visitors.

“We just want to say a very big thank-you to you all for the tremendous work that our volunteers do.”

Coun Hill, who also volunteers in the hospital’s Macmillan Information and Support Centre said: “I’m looking forward to seeing these lights raise the spirits of people in hospital over Christmas. I’m going to be visiting the hospital on Christmas Day, so I’ll make sure we have some fun.”

The lights and workings were kindly sponsored by local companies Spa Environmental Care plc and GS Adams Ltd.

Chris Rymer from Spa Environmental Care based in Stratford said: “We’re really pleased we could help out our local hospital and make the place look festive for people who are not well.”

Nigel Smith from GS Adams Ltd based in Studley said: “We pulled out all the stops to get the lights up as soon as we heard help was needed, it’s good to be able to do something for the local community.”
