AN ALCESTER woman who Winston Churchill referred to as ‘his little deary’ has celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and the necessary glass of ‘chebbly’.

Chloe Sachs, of Meadow View Close, received her card from the Queen on Friday (December 18) and was joined by several of loved ones, including her daughters Patricia Beard and Claire Goldby .

Chloe said: “I have had a wonderful day. It has been lovely. The card I received from the Queen is beautiful with a lovely picture on the front.”

Chloe was born during the First World War and worked for Winston Churchill during World War Two at Bush House in London where she said she never missed a bomb raid as she is claustrophobic and always refused to go into the bomb shelters.

In 1946 she helped open the Shakespeare Hotel and ran it until 1966. “I loved the challenge,” she said. “Some of my fondest memories are of running the hotel and finding the staff.”

The centenarian put her long life down to hard work and the help of her wonderful husband, Emil, who died at aged 88.

“He was quite a challenge but I loved that about him. I miss him very much.”
