School run barriers spark up a dispute

NEIGHBOURS in Headless Cross are in dispute over barriers erected to stop school run parents parking on the grass verge.

The barriers were put in place on Tennyson Road by the borough council last month following concerns about parents driving to Vaynor First School and parking up the kerbs and destroying the grass.

Resident Derek Crawford said: “Most people are quite happy with them being there. The only people who aren’t are those who come here to park.

“They have put up timber bollards in the past but they just back their big powerful cars straight into them and knock them down.

“Now if they try to park there it will be difficult for them to open the doors.”

Another home owner said the barriers have not solved the problem and have caused yet another hazard.

“It doesn’t stop them parking there. The children just get out and bump the doors or get out on in the middle of the road which is more dangerous. Worse still the children are coming and swinging off them,” said another resident.

Ward Councillor Tom Baker-Price said: “I had received complaints of people parking on the grass verge. It has been a big problem and these green barriers were put in place because they are more stable than the wooden ones and more cost effective for the council.

“Residents were concerned the grass was just becoming a muddy swamp.

“We are looking into ways to improve traffic flow in the area and in the next three months were are hoping to put double yellow lines in place.

“There have been some reports of anti-social behaviour around the barriers and this is something we will monitor.”
