UP to 90 lorries an hour are thundering along the A435 through Studley, according to a survey by a concerned local resident.
Ian Derwent monitored traffic at different times of the day and week late last year with volumes peaking at 1,816 of all types of vehicles per hour on a Tuesday between 8.30am and 9am.
In a letter to the parish council this Alcester Road resident called for action to curtail the amount of traffic using the busy highway through the village.
Council leader Councillor Paul Beaman said that, despite the ‘de-trunking’ of the A435 the road was still on the lorry route for vehicles heading for the M42, M5 and M40.
“Unless major work is done to divert traffic out of Studley there is little we can do,” he admitted.
He added that the ‘de-trunking’ from Highways Agency control to Warwickshire County Council meant that there was even less likelihood of a bypass being built and even if one was mooted building it across Studley park was a step too far.
Councillors heard a further issue was what had happened in Alcester where the bypass had led to an increase in housing while the town still had traffic problems.
However Coun Sandra Crofts said: “The traffic situation is not going to get any better and we need to have a plan, one that includes the whole village because it’s no good just moving the problem from one road to another.”
Councillors agreed to invite a representative from the county’s traffic and road safety department to a meeting to explore what options were available and further agreed that a new up to date survey would need to be done on traffic volumes.
