THE number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Redditch and Bromsgrove has spiralled to a record high of more than 9,380 people, an increase of nearly 11 per cent since 2012, according to Diabetes UK.

The new figures, extracted from GP data from Redditch & Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group show the number of people with diabetes here is far higher than the almost six per cent increase seen across England over the past three years.

Complication arising from diabetes include blindness, kidney failure and amputation.

Dr Jonathan Wells, chair and clinical lead for NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “There are a number of changes people can make to their lifestyle to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, including eating healthier, getting more exercise and losing weight.

“Here in Worcestershire we have recently seen the launch of Mapmydiabetes, an education tool enabling patients to take better control and self-manage their condition.”
