County gritting lorries geared to clear roads in Redditch as snow threatens

Redditch Editorial 14th Jan, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

HIGHWAYS gritting teams will be in action this evening after forecasts of rain, sleet and snow, as well as freezing conditions lasting through until tomorrow.

There is a risk of ice forming on surfaces that remain damp from daytime showers, along with the likelihood of a widespread frost. From 8pm showers of rain, sleet and snow are likely, giving further accumulations by 6am of up to 3cm at low levels, 6cm at altitudes of above 100m and up to 10cm above 250m, before clearing by 7am.

This year Worcestershire County Council has over  17,000 tonnes of salt, and 1233 grit bins across the County with 30 gritters all equipped with latest brine spraying technology gritting over  1500 miles of road every time a full grit is carried out.

Councillor John Smith, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways said: “As usual I would encourage anyone making journeys to take care. Snow and sleet obviously makes it more difficult for drivers so please don’t take any risks. Grit has never been a miracle cure, so as always, the message is to never assume it’s safe to travel at normal speeds even if you think a highway has been treated.”

Further information about the gritting operation, including route maps is available on our website together the locations of grit bins www.worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting.
