MEMBERS of a charity that raises more than £6,000 every year to help Astwood Bank residents will celebrate its golden anniversary next weekend.
The Astwood Bank Welfare Association, which was set up in 1966, will hit the 50-year milestone on Sunday (January 24).
The group may have existed before this, possibly from as long ago as 1961 when it was known as Astwood Bank Old People’s Fund.
The charity has always had the same philosophy – to raise money for the benefit of the elderly and disadvantaged people of the village – and provides wheelchairs, walking frames and other mobility aids to those in need.
Members also purchase a Christmas and birthday present for residents over 85 along with a gift to mark the Golden Wedding anniversary of couples in the village.
