Steeple Chase will fund-raise for Alcester church

Redditch Editorial 12th Feb, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

RESIDENTS across the borough are being urged to put their best foot – or hoof – forwards in a fund-raising Steeple Chase for Alcester’s St Nicholas Church.

The Butter Street building is the lead of eight churches which together form the Alcester Minster and has been on the site since the 12th century when it was part of Alcester Abbey.

But the historic building, which boasts a tower dating back to the 14th century, is now in urgent need of repairs to its stonework.

To ensure the church can still be used as a place of worship but more broadly for use by individuals and groups throughout the community, £250,000 needs to be raised for the St Nicholas Church Restoration Fund.

Organisers, led by former district councillor Nick Moon, are hoping people across the local area will pledge to take part in the Steeple Chase on May 30, opting to complete five, ten or 20 miles by walking, running or riding the Alcester Minster Trail.

Mr Moon is also working on a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to help secure support for the restoration.

Participants will start and finish at St Nicholas at 10am before following their chosen route on foot, push bike or even on horseback, visiting the eight churches that make up the Minster along the way.

Everyone who finishes their designated course will receive a medal and all children (15 and under) will receive a t-shirt.

Entrance is charged at £25 for families, £15 for adults and £8 for children, who must be accompanied by an adult if under 15.
