Studley talks kick off with Sir Gawain-inspired art

ARTWORK inspired by a world-famous English medieval poem will be the subject of the first artist’s talk at the Studley Workhouse arts centre.

Jo Naden will explain how the legendary ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ drove her to create a series of five medals which she’s collectively named as ‘A Year and a Day’ in tribute to the tale.

The ‘Green Knight’ or ‘Green Man’ is a key figure in English folklore and carvings depicting him have been incorporated into the country’s buildings for centuries.

The poem tells how the Green Knight challenges the Knights of the Round Table to chop his head off. When Sir Gawain accepts the challenge and duly carries out the deed, he’s horrified to see the Green Knight pick up his head, put it back on his shoulders and tell him he’ll be back in a year and a day to repay the blow to Sir Gawain.

Artist Jo’s work is held in private collections both internationally and in the UK. Public commissions include Cadbury, Dudley Group of Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Park Central development in Birmingham.

A recently completed contemporary medal for the British Art Medal Society, Time Spent, explores the dandelion in a mythical/ botanical context.

Her talk is on Friday, February 26 from 7pm to 9pm and tickets to see and hear this internationally renowned artist are just £6 to include light refreshments.
