HUNDREDS of shoppers were evacuated from the town’s Kingfisher Shopping Centre this morning (Tuesday).
Redditch residents and visitors to the town centre were left standing in the cold for more than half-an-hour as the centre was evacuated as a precaution after a fire alarm.
One shopper said she had been enjoying a coffee in Marks and Spencer’s café when a member of staff told her everyone in the centre was being evacuated.
“I asked her if she had burnt the toast but she just said we all had to leave,” she added.
Ken Williams, general manager, said the evacuation was the result of a false fire alarm but the centre was evacuated accordingly to protocol.
He added: “Once the signal goes out we have to follow through and complete an evacuation of all areas.”
Members of staff who work in the centre were allowed to enter the Kingfisher at around 11.30am with members of the public following shortly after.
