Redditch Borough Council to harness solar power

REDDITCH Borough Council are harnessing solar power in their latest bid to reduce their carbon footprint.

Two of the town’s council buildings – Abbey Stadium and Crossgates Depot – are now equipped to harness energy from the sun, after having solar panels installed in December.

The initiative saw 120 panels installed at the Abbey Stadium and 112 at Crossgates which could see the council save more than £2,000 per site, per year on bills.

The Crossgates Depot panels will also help to charge the councils’ new electric van and its existing electric litter collection vehicle.

This is the latest project from the council to improve their carbon footprint including buying electric utility vehicles, getting an A rating for energy efficiency at the Palace Theatre, hosting Worcestershire County Council’s electric vehicle charging points at the Abbey Stadium and Greenlands Business Centre and of course the Green Apple Award winning scheme at the Abbey Stadium and Redditch Crematorium.

Councillor

Councillor Debbie Taylor, whose portfolio covers Environmental Services, said: “This latest project will give us enough energy across both sites to power the equivalent of six houses for an entire year.

“Not only does this save us money, I think it is fantastic that we are continuing to improve the carbon footprint of our buildings year on year.”
