PUPILS across the borough turned to a new chapter this week – looking forward to the arrival of Spring and celebrating World Book Day.
On Thursday (March 3) youngsters at St Bede’s Catholic Middle School were treated to a visit by The Little English Theatre and former poet laureate Spoz who completed a series of activities with students throughout the day.
Youngsters in Year 5 even visited St Bede’s very own Post Office to send post cards they had designed and written.
The children also took part in a ‘Drop and Read’ which saw them stop everything they were doing whenever a school bell rang to pick up their chosen book and continue reading until the bell sounded again.
After working up a hearty appetite, the book worms tucked into ‘Mad Hatter’s Chicken Stacker’, ‘Queen of Hearts Pie’ and ‘Alice’s Enchanted Apple Crumble’ with lucky pupils who found a golden ticket hiding on their plate taking home a prize.
Over in Webheath, youngsters at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic First School Academy celebrated in style, dressing as their favourite book characters.
During the day, the children took part in a range of fun activities including storytelling sessions, a similar ‘Drop and Read’ session and a creative writing workshop inspired by local author, Karen King, who visited the school on Wednesday (March 2).
