Church Hill schoolgirl goes to top over buses

A CHURCH HILL schoolgirl was over the moon when the town’s MP responded to an email she sent to her office, voicing her concerns about road safety.

After hearing about an incident in January where a man was airlifted to hospital following an incident with a Diamond bus in Church Hill, Aimee Bates took it upon herself to contact Karen Lumley.

The 13-year-old, who didn’t tell her parents she had emailed the MP, was overjoyed when she received a response.

“She was absolutely buzzing,” said proud mum, Kate.

“She’s very close to her aunt and had asked her about writing to Mrs Lumley but hadn’t mentioned to me or her dad she had actually contacted her.”

The schoolgirl received a reply from Mrs Lumley herself, inviting both Aimee and her mum to meet her outside Church Hill Middle School to discuss road safety.

Mrs Lumley said: “It was lovely to meet Aimee and it is so nice to see young people take an interest in their community.

“During my visit we saw more than ten buses pass – there is an obvious problem.”

Following their correspondence, Mrs Lumley has invited both Amiee and Kate to a meeting she will host with Diamond Bus operations director Chris Blyth and County Councillor John Smith (Cons, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways) today (Friday).

Mrs Lumley added she is looking forward to discussing what safety measures could be put in place in the area.

“Hopefully we can work together to arrange a site visit and assess potential safety measures.”
