Redditch Town Hall scene of lively EU Q&A session

REDDITCH Town Hall was the scene for a lively question and answer session last night (Thursday) on the European Union referendum.

Hosted by West Midlands Conservative MEP Anthea McIntyre, the event saw a range of subjects discussed including the cost of EU membership, the roles of the European courts, impact on trade, the possibilities of further countries joining the bloc, and the scope of the Prime Minister’s renegotiation.

Miss McIntyre believes voters feel short of simple and reliable information ahead of the June 23 referendum, especially as both sides in the debate offer such contradictory messages.

She said: “There was a great turnout from the people of Redditch and the surrounding area.

“I am continually seeing what a huge appetite there is for clear and simple information – people feel each side of the debate is bombarding them with supposed facts – but they know both versions cannot be true.

“We had a real mix of voters and views, but I think what they all had in common was that they wanted to know more.”

Miss McIntyre added she favours Britain remaining in a reformed EU and she believes David Cameron’s renegotiation has ‘set us on the right course’.

She said: “In these meetings I set out to give impartial information wherever possible, often from the House of Commons Library.

“When I offer my opinion, I say that’s what it is. I think people appreciate that.”
