Police advise Redditch pet-owners during Pet Theft Awareness Week

Redditch Editorial 15th Mar, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

PET-OWNERS are reminded about the importance of making sure their animals are secure as part of Pet Theft Awareness Week.

Police are urging animal-lovers not to make it easy for pet thieves who may strike at any time.

Dog-owners are warned to never leave their four-legged-friends unattended whilst shopping and to be aware that thieves will grab dogs from owners during walks.

Technology is also recommended to protect your pets – with almost half of dogs which are stolen being taken from gardens, CCTV and locked gates can act as a deterrent.

But it’s not just dogs – birds, fish, rabbits, horses, reptiles, farm animals and cats are also commonly stolen.

Would-be pet owners are also urged to guard against unknowingly buying stolen animals by checking for micro-chips and help to return them to their rightful owners if they are found to be stolen.

West Mercia Police will be sharing information throughout this week in honour of the event which runs until Monday (March 21).
