Pedalling churchman Peter gets on his bike to raise funds for King John's Edgar Tower

THE Dean of Worcester Cathedral is to do a 1,000 kilometres sponsored bike ride in Normandy in support of the cathedral’s ‘Friends’.

The Very Reverend Peter Atkinson will undertake the ‘Dean’s Challenge’ during a three-month sabbatical this summer, and plans to set off in June.

The great Benedictine abbeys such as Le Mont St Michel and Le Bec which he will visit, were founded in the same century as Worcester cathedral.

However, there is a double challenge at stake – one is for the Dean to complete his cycle ride, and the other is for the Friends of Worcester Cathedral, because for every kilometre sponsored it is hoped they’ll recruit a new Friend.

For £10 in sponsorship will bring a year’s free membership of the Friends and they’re hoping to raise £10,000 from the venture.

It is hoped that the money will go towards the repair of the Edgar Tower, first built by King John, who died 800 years ago in 1216. It was the gatehouse to his castle and was the monastic entrance of Worcester Cathedral Priory. The Tower is currently being repaired at a cost of nearly £500,000.
