Redditch family’s near miss during pavement work

A FURIOUS Redditch mum has hit out at county contractors who forced her onto the road and into the face of oncoming traffic.

Julie Morris, with baby Lana, aged six months and son Haydn, four, in tow, had such a near miss that the driver pulled over to make sure she was okay.

The incident centred around pavement repairs on Cedar Road in Batchley which started last Friday and finished on Wednesday.

“The workmen were digging up the pavement and put up signposts telling pedestrians to cross to the other side, only they’d only gone and parked all their cars and lorries on it forcing us onto the road,” said Julie, aged 35.

To make matters worse, Cedar Road is a popular route for parents taking their children to Birchensale and Holyoaks Schools.

“To my mind they were putting us in danger,” said Julie, of Bridley Moor Road.

“I said something to the workmen but they didn’t care at all, just made some remarks back.

“I was taking Haydn to nursery and we had a near miss – it was so close the driver stopped and we agreed that what the contractors were doing was wrong.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We can confirm that footway improvement works have recently been completed on Cedar Road, Redditch, and the site is due for inspection.

“The safety of pedestrians and road-users is our priority, and these works were necessary to maintain the footway. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we will work to ensure that disruption to thoroughfare is minimised in future.”
