Singer-songwriter serenades St Bede's students

A SINGER-songwriter who’s star is definitely in the ascent sweetly serenaded pupils at the town’s St Bede’s Catholic Middle School (Academy) this week.

Beth Sherburn shot to fame after being overheard singing while at work behind a perfume counter at Debenhams in Dudley’s Merry Hill shopping centre.

The talented songstress has performed at Wembley and supported both The Saturday’s and Conor Maynard but it was her performance at the Holloway Lane site which raised the roof on Wednesday (March 23).

Beth treated both staff and students to a cover of Justin Beiber’s ‘Love Yourself’ and renditions of her self-penned tracks, Joker – which features American rapper Lil Wayne – and new single YOLO.

The performance was the last date in the diary for Beth’s school tour, which has seen her visit more than 100 schools, before she embarks on her UK tour in April.

The 25-year-old, who describes her sound as ‘feel good pop’, will kick start proceedings at Birmingham’s Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath on Sunday, April 10. And it’s not a bad place to start, having welcomed Birmingham legends UB40 for their first ever gig in 1979.

But along with touring and rubbing shoulders with household names, Beth has been busy in the studio working on her album and new single ‘YOLO’ which drops on May 27.

And kind-hearted Beth is as beautiful inside as she is out, combining her performance at St Bede’s with the opportunity to address staying safe online and cyber-bullying.

During her two performances Beth discussed with the students how to stay safe online and when using social media by sharing some of her own experiences.

She advised the children never to give out personal information or accept requests from strangers online and to be sure to keep a record of any worrying messages before showing them to an adult.

Along with the safety reminders, Beth shared with pupils how too much time spent online or on social media can be detrimental to your health and wellbeing.

The talented songstress shared how when she found herself going to bed later and later and spending longer hours logged on to her computer, the affects started to show on her voice.

She added: “I know we don’t always want to but we should always listen to our parents when they tell us to come offline.

“We need to respect them because they’re older and wiser – we must always be mature when we are online.”
